![]() Squadrons ships don’t really behave like real world aircraft - they almost feel like helicopters in the way that they can come to a complete stop and then accelerate very rapidly in any direction. The effectiveness of missiles vs guns makes a huge difference to strategies, and Squadrons doesn’t have a good real world equivalent There is no gravity in Squadrons (and no “up” and “down”) and so very fundamental real world strategies like ensuring that you have an altitude advantage over your opponent do not apply Ī lot comes down to weaponry (for example, missiles in the real world today are far more effective than in Squadrons, though at the time of the Vietnam War missiles were highly unreliable). The bottom line is that real world tactics don’t properly apply to Squadrons as: This is a dense and detailed book but there is some top class analysis of what tactics work in air to air combat. ![]() The author flew several hundred combat sorties and spent a long time analysing the correct strategies. ![]() If you really want to go down the rabbit hole and understand proper air to air combat strategies in the real world (a small amount of which will be applicable to Squadrons), try “Clashes: Air Combat over North Vietnam 1965-1972” by Marshall L Michel III.
